Two Main Dishes

Many years ago, I ran a lunch restaurant where we served two main dishes each day.

Quite often someone would stand there smiling and say, “Oh, what should I choose? They both look so good.”

I usually smiled back and replied, “When you're faced with two tempting choices, choose both.”

People laughed, relaxed, and enjoyed tasting a little of each.

Looking back, I sometimes think life offers us something similar.

One dish is contentment: trusting that despite life's uncertainties we are safe enough to enjoy the moment.

The other is engagement: taking initiative, making a difference, and leaving our own small imprint on the world.

Perhaps we were never meant to choose between them.

Perhaps a fulfilling life is one in which we learn to enjoy both.
