The Goodness Within the Heart

As we continue to evolve our technological devices, shamelessly using them to target one another in a war between "good" and "bad," we risk blinding ourselves to the greater values of being human.

I fully appreciate that we have different ideas about good and bad, and I do not aim to take sides in any particular way. Rather, my goal is to shine a spotlight on the goodness within our hearts.

Throughout the history of modern humanity—essentially, for as long as we have known anything about ourselves—we have considered intrinsic goodness to be something real.

As an ideal, it cannot be proven by scientific standards, but the historical examples are numerous. From the Egyptian goddess Ma'at, who was the daughter of Ra and weighed our hearts against a feather to determine our worthiness to enter the kingdom above—to the Vedic tradition where the "ever-good" Rta serves as the infinite backdrop of all existence, regardless of human actions—or the ancient Greeks who referred to it as Eudaimonia, "the ultimate good in itself."

Hand in hand with our fascination for crude power walks our longing for peace, love, and understanding.

Time and again, we are called to ask ourselves which we desire the most.

Today, as we again face violence and fear, fighting one another over opinions and rights, let us remember the intrinsic goodness within our hearts and open ourselves to its wisdom.
