Sat-Chit-Ananda

What is reality? What is existence at its most fundamental level?

These are often said to be the deepest questions one can ask. The Vedantic thought tradition offers a clear answer: Sat-Chit-Ananda. Here, Sat means truth — pure, true existence; Chit means consciousness — pure, all-pervading awareness; and Ananda means pure happiness — bliss, unconditional joy. These three principles, combined into one, represent the utmost fundamental level of reality and existence.

If we compare this to the Infinity Principle, we arrive at more or less the same answer — though with a slight difference. The Infinity Principle takes its starting point in the simple fact that infinity is infinite. This is, of course, not a particularly provocative claim — quite the opposite. It is as logical and self-evident as anything can be. Infinity is infinite; there are no hidden traps here.

The next step is recognizing that infinity is one. There are not two infinities — and thus, in a sense, the infinite factor frames the All: that which is one, which is everywhere, and which has no beginning and no end. The infinite contains everything else, and without it, nothing else could exist. In this way, it offers a simple description of reality and existence as one all-inclusive whole. This is not a flowery fantasy, but a straightforward truth.

Taking it one step further, we see that since it is one all-inclusive wholeness, it has no enemy; it has no counterpart — it is one, and one only. We must also recognize that it holds a kind of fundamental “frequency.” In other words, it is not neutral — it expresses a perpetual force, an energy, an issness, a positive ground vibration. We might say that it encapsulates an unchallenged force that never wavers.

This unchallenged ground-force can have only one inclination — it is eternally and positively giving.

This leads us to the conclusion that reality is one, positively charged, all-containing whole.

Infinity is the only thing that cannot be erased. Everything else can be taken away — but not infinity. Even if everything else were gone, infinity would still be infinite. And what is more, it would still be joyous and positively giving.

In that sense, it is quite similar to the concept of Sat-Chit-Ananda. The notion of one ultimate truth is clearly present, and the inherent charge of bliss can also be clearly recognized.

What remains is to understand the nature of consciousness.

I will return to that tomorrow.
