A couple of days ago I had a small conversation with a colleague at work. Somehow the discussion drifted toward eternity, eternal life, and the strange nature of existence itself. I enjoy such conversations, even if one rarely arrives at any final answers.
Then he suddenly said something that made me laugh out loud.
He remarked that one could never actually know whether one had eternal life.
And strangely enough, he was absolutely right.
Think about it for a moment: if something truly were eternal, at what point could you ever conclude that it had become eternal? You could always only experience it moment by moment.
For someone like me — who has spent plenty of time pondering the mysteries of existence — I found that amusing indeed — and at the same time oddly comforting.
Perhaps there are certain questions we are not meant to solve completely.
And perhaps there is also a kind of relief in that.
